East of the walls, the road that leaves Porta Elisa for Capannori, Pescia and Florence divides into a fan of long straight streets: Via Romana, Via di Tiglio, Viale Castracani. The quarters that have grown along them, Arancio first and then San Filippo and San Vito, form the eastern suburb of Lucca, a mix of villas with gardens, apartment buildings and newer housing farther out.

On this site the Arancio area covers all of this eastern side outside the walls, from the avenues at the foot of the ramparts to the San Luca hospital and the large hotel on the approach road, about 2.5 km from Piazza San Michele. The Botanical Garden, Via Elisa and the Mazzini car park are inside the gate and belong to the San Francesco pages.

Who should stay in Arancio?

Arancio is the area outside the walls with the widest choice. It suits drivers, who find free parking at most properties and are outside the limited traffic zone; families who want space and a calmer street than the centre can offer; business travellers who want a hotel with a car park; and anyone who needs to be near the hospital. Travel guides describe the east of Lucca as leafy, family-oriented and semi-suburban.

It suits less well travellers without a car who are staying towards the outer end of the area, where the walk to the centre is half an hour, and those who want restaurants on the doorstep. Train travellers are better served by San Concordio.

What kind of accommodation is there?

The 45 properties are more varied than in any other outer area: about 20 apartments, seven villas, six bed and breakfasts, four hotels, four guest houses, three holiday homes and a homestay. The hotels span the categories, with two four-star houses, Albergo Celide and Best Western Grand Hotel Guinigi, one three-star and the two-star Hotel Melecchi.

Several of the bed and breakfasts are set in villas; Villa Romantica Wellness & SPA is among the best known. About seven in ten properties offer free parking, half accept pets, and one listing mentions a swimming pool. The listing tells you what parking is available and how far the property is from the centre.

How far is it from the centre?

The distance from Piazza San Michele ranges from 800 m to 2.5 km, with the typical property at 1.3 km: from about 10 minutes on foot to more than half an hour. What matters in practice is the distance from Porta Elisa, and nearly every listing, 43 out of 45, is within 1 km of it. From the gate, Via Elisa leads straight into the east of the centre; Torre Guinigi is about 700 m farther on, and two in three properties in the area have it within 1 km.

Piazza dell'Anfiteatro is about 1.2 km in a straight line from the middle of Arancio, the cathedral 1.1 to 1.3 km and the railway station 1.2 to 1.4 km, so each is roughly 15 to 20 minutes away.

Which gate do you use?

Porta Elisa is the youngest of the old gates, opened between 1809 and 1811 under Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi. A tourist information point reopened beside it in summer 2025, and there are seasonal public toilets. For walkers and cyclists it is simply the door to the centre; for drivers it is a camera-controlled entrance, since the limited traffic zone gate on Via Elisa has been active since January 2026, so do not follow the road through the arch unless your accommodation inside has registered your number plate.

During Lucca Comics & Games in 2025, Porta Elisa was one of the two gates through which authorised vehicles were allowed to enter.

Where do you park?

Most guests park at their accommodation. For those who cannot, the tourist office lists the Macelli car park, on the east side, as free, and a 2026 parking guide also names the Campo di Marte area among the free ones.

The alternative is the Mazzini car park, which is inside the walls but reachable by non-residents, in Via dei Bacchettoni on the east side of the centre: 300 spaces, open 24 hours with video surveillance, at €1 to €1.50 for the first hour and €1.50 to €2 for each following hour according to tariffs published in 2025 and 2026, and a flat €2 for the night.

What is there in the neighbourhood?

The sights closest to Arancio are those of the eastern centre, a few steps inside Porta Elisa: the Orto Botanico, the city's botanical garden beside the San Regolo bastion and, a little farther, Torre Guinigi. Just outside the gate stands the monastery and sanctuary of Santa Gemma Galgani, a place of pilgrimage that nine in ten properties have within 1 km.

For open space there is the park of Campo di Marte, on the northern edge of the area, and the tree-lined promenade on top of the walls, reached in minutes from the gate. The Porta Elisa stadium, the city's football ground, is also on this side. The San Luca hospital, the city's hospital, with 410 beds and an emergency department, is in Via Guglielmo Lippi Francesconi at San Filippo, at the outer edge of the area.

Is it noisy?

It depends on the street. Via Romana, Via di Tiglio and Viale Castracani are the main roads towards Capannori and carry traffic for most of the day, and the avenues below the walls are part of the ring road. The streets between them are residential and quiet at night. The city's wholesale fruit and vegetable market is also in this part of town, within 1 km of most properties.

When does it fill up?

Lucca Comics & Games, from 28 October to 1 November in 2026, fills every room in the city, and reserving months ahead is the rule. Concert nights of the Lucca Summer Festival, between late June and late July, and the garden show Murabilia on the walls in early September also raise demand.
