San Michele is the middle of walled Lucca: the square of San Michele in Foro, laid out on the site of the Roman forum, Piazza Napoleone, the Duomo di San Martino and the lanes that join them. It holds more places to stay than any other part of Lucca.

On this site the San Michele area covers the centre and the whole south-west and west of the walled city: from the lower end of Via Fillungo west to Piazzale Verdi and Porta Sant'Anna, north-west to Palazzo Mansi and Porta San Donato, and south to the Duomo and Porta San Pietro. The name is an editorial one, borrowed from the church and its square.

Who should stay in San Michele?

San Michele suits first-time visitors, anyone arriving by train or regional bus, and people in town for a concert or the opera. The properties listed here are between 100 and 500 m from Piazza San Michele, half of them within about 200 m. Porta San Pietro is the gate nearest the railway station, and the bus terminal of Piazzale Verdi is inside the area.

It suits drivers less well. You are inside the limited traffic zone, about three quarters of the listings state that they have no parking, and only a handful offer a free space. Light sleepers should avoid Piazza Napoleone on concert nights in June and July, and no property here lists a pool.

What kind of accommodation is there in San Michele?

Mostly apartments. Of the 187 properties in the area, about 140 are apartments, around 15 are guest houses, a similar number are B&Bs and nine are hotels, the largest group of hotels inside the walls. Four of the hotels declare four stars, among them San Luca Palace and Hotel Palazzo Alexander; Albergo San Martino, near the cathedral, is a three-star, and Hotel Diana a two-star. Roughly four in ten properties accept pets. Old buildings mean stairs: check each listing for the floor and for a lift.

How do you get to San Michele from the station, and where do you park?

On foot from the train: the station is about 350 m from Porta San Pietro, and Piazza San Michele is some 650 m from the station in a straight line, eight to ten minutes' walk. Regional buses stop at Piazzale Verdi, five or six minutes' walk west of Piazza San Michele.

By car, arrange things with your host before you arrive. The streets here are controlled by cameras, and in January 2026 further electronic gates were switched on, including those at Porta San Pietro, Via Galli Tassi and Via della Dogana. Since 1 January 2026 accommodation businesses can issue daily permits for guests' vehicles, up to one per room, so send your number plate in advance and do not drive through a gate until the property confirms.

The two convenient car parks outside the walls for this area are Carducci, on the ring road to the south-west with about 510 spaces, and Stazione, by the railway with about 677; listings from 2025 give both at about €1 an hour with a daily maximum of about €8.

What can you see on foot from San Michele?

Piazza Napoleone is two or three minutes south of San Michele in Foro, with the Teatro del Giglio beside it. The Duomo di San Martino is about five minutes from Piazza San Michele: in 2026 the cathedral with the tomb of Ilaria del Carretto costs €5, and a combined ticket with the bell tower, the cathedral museum and the church of San Giovanni costs €10.

Puccini's birthplace is at Corte San Lorenzo 9, a few steps from Piazza San Michele. In 2026 a ticket costs €9 (€7 reduced); the house opens daily from 9:30 to 19:00 between April and September, with shorter hours in the rest of the year. The national museum of Palazzo Mansi, in Via Galli Tassi, charged €6 in 2026, or €10 combined with the museum of Villa Guinigi on the east side.

On Via Fillungo, where this area meets the Anfiteatro area, the Torre delle Ore is the tallest of the city's towers at 50 m, climbed by 207 wooden steps. Piazza dell'Anfiteatro and Torre Guinigi are each about 400 m from Piazza San Michele, five or six minutes away.

Is San Michele noisy at night?

It depends on the street. The blocks around Piazza San Michele and Via Fillungo are the liveliest in the city in the evening. The streets around the Duomo are central but residential and quieter, a good compromise for families and couples.

The exception is the Lucca Summer Festival. Its main stage is in Piazza Napoleone; in 2026 it ran from 24 June to 29 July, with most concerts starting at 21:00 or 21:30. A room on or near the square puts you next to the stage on those nights.

When is San Michele most expensive?

During Lucca Comics & Games, from 28 October to 1 November in 2026. Piazza Napoleone holds the comics publishers' pavilion, the Palazzo Ducale hosts exhibitions and the games pavilion stands on Viale Carducci, just outside the walls, and rooms sell out months ahead. In the 2025 edition vehicles were banned from the central limited traffic zone between 09:00 and 19:00 and Porta San Pietro was closed to traffic from 07:00 to 20:30.

A gentler event is the antiques market around the Duomo, in Piazza San Martino, Piazza Antelminelli and nearby streets, on the third Sunday of each month and the Saturday before: the remaining 2026 dates are 17–18 October, 14–15 November and 19–20 December.

Frequently asked questions

Which gate is closest to the railway station?

Porta San Pietro, on the south side of the walls, about 350 m from the station.

Can I drive to a hotel in San Michele?

Only by agreement with the property. The area is inside the camera-controlled limited traffic zone; give your number plate before arrival and wait for confirmation before entering a gate.

Where do the Lucca Summer Festival concerts take place?

The main stage is in Piazza Napoleone, in this area, with a few of the largest shows on the lawns by the walls. In 2026 the festival ran from 24 June to 29 July.

Is San Michele a good base without a car?

Yes. The station is under ten minutes on foot, regional buses to Pisa, Florence and Viareggio leave from Piazzale Verdi inside the area, and every main sight in Lucca is within about 20 minutes' walk.

Are there hotels with parking in San Michele?

Few. About three quarters of the properties here state that they have no parking, and only five list free parking. Ask about the arrangement and its cost before you reserve.
