The south side of Lucca is where the trains arrive. The railway station stands in Piazzale Ricasoli, about 200 m from the walls, and behind it, beyond the tracks, begins San Concordio, a residential quarter that most visitors never see. The gate that serves it is Porta San Pietro.

On this site the San Concordio area covers both halves: the station district north of the railway, with Piazzale Ricasoli and the avenues at the foot of the walls, and the quarter of San Concordio proper to the south, around Via Nottolini and its parish church. It is the smallest of the areas outside the walls, and the one with the highest proportion of hotels.

Who should stay in San Concordio?

Anyone travelling by train. From here you can reach Pisa, Florence, Viareggio and the Garfagnana without a car. The area also suits travellers who want a hotel with a reception and a breakfast room, people on a one-night stop between two other Tuscan cities, and visitors who want the cathedral close by without sleeping inside the limited traffic zone.

It suits less well those looking for a villa, a garden or a pool: there is none of that here. Drivers should also read the listings carefully, because parking is less of a given than in the other outer areas.

What kind of accommodation is there?

The 25 properties are about 18 apartments, four hotels, two bed and breakfasts and a guest house. The hotels cover the range: two four-star houses, Hotel Napoleon and Exe Toscana, the three-star Hotel Rex and the two-star Albergo Moderno.

About half of the properties offer free parking, while ten say they have none, a higher share than anywhere else outside the walls. Fewer than a third accept pets, and no listing mentions a pool. Each listing gives the distance from the centre and the parking arrangement.

How far is it from the station and the sights?

This is the closest of the outer areas to the centre: properties lie between 600 m and 1.5 km from Piazza San Michele, and the typical one is only 700 m away, under ten minutes on foot. All but one are within 1 km of the railway station, and more than four in five are within 1 km of the Duomo di San Martino, which stands just inside the southern stretch of the walls.

Piazza dell'Anfiteatro is at the opposite end of the centre, about 1.2 km in a straight line from the station district, so allow 15 to 20 minutes. From the streets south of the railway add the time needed to cross the tracks and reach the station square: the middle of San Concordio is about 600 m from the station as the crow flies.

How do you get from the station into the centre?

Porta San Pietro, built in 1565, is about 350 m from the station entrance and is the traditional way in from this side. Since 14 May 2025 there is also a more direct route: a pedestrian and cycle underpass that starts in Piazzale Ricasoli, passes beneath the ring road and comes out at the foot of the walls, so you avoid crossing the traffic of the avenue with your luggage.

Some of the older pedestrian passages through the bastions near the station are not usable by people with reduced mobility. The station itself has a staffed ticket office, machines, a bar, a waiting room and toilets on platform 1, and across the square the Tourist Center Lucca offers luggage storage and bicycle hire. Regional trains to Pisa Centrale take about half an hour.

Where do you park?

The Stazione car park, between Piazzale Ricasoli and Via Cairoli, has 677 spaces; tariffs published in 2025 were €1 an hour with a daily maximum of €8 and a flat €2 for the night, from 20:00 to 08:00. Being outside the walls, the area is outside the limited traffic zone, but do not drive through Porta San Pietro without a permit: the cameras at that gate were among those switched on in January 2026.

Event days bring their own rules. For the concerts of 4, 16 and 19 July 2026 the Stazione car park was placed under event management, and during Lucca Comics & Games in 2025 Porta San Pietro was closed to vehicles from 07:00 to 20:30.

What is there in the neighbourhood?

The best reason to walk south rather than north is the Nottolini aqueduct. Lorenzo Nottolini, the architect of Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, built it between 1823 and 1851 to bring spring water from the hills at Guamo. It ends in San Concordio at a circular neoclassical temple, the cistern where the water was collected before entering the city in pipes; from there a line of more than 400 arches runs south for about 3 km across the fields, interrupted where the A11 motorway was cut through it. The Via degli Acquedotti trail follows it and continues over the hills to Pisa, 25 km in all.

Closer to the walls, the green spaces are the Parco della Pace, within 1 km of every property in the area, and Piazzale Risorgimento, the open space outside Porta San Pietro. The parish church of San Concordio stands in the quarter south of the tracks.

Is it noisy, and when does it fill up?

The avenues below the walls are part of the ring road and carry traffic all day; ask about rooms that face them or the railway. The residential streets of San Concordio are quieter.

The area sells out first for Lucca Comics & Games, 28 October to 1 November in 2026, because so many of the festival's visitors arrive by train. Summer Festival nights between late June and late July are the other peak.

Frequently asked questions

How far is the railway station from the centre of Lucca?

The station is about 200 m from the walls and 350 m from Porta San Pietro; Piazza San Michele is about 650 m away in a straight line, under ten minutes on foot.

Is there an underpass from the station to the walls?

Yes. A pedestrian and cycle underpass opened on 14 May 2025 and links Piazzale Ricasoli with the foot of the walls beneath the ring road.

Are there hotels near Lucca station?

Yes: four of the properties in this area are hotels, two with four stars, one with three and one with two, alongside apartments and bed and breakfasts.

Where can you leave luggage near the station?

At the Tourist Center Lucca in Piazzale Ricasoli, opposite the station, which also hires out bicycles.

Can you walk to the Nottolini aqueduct from the station?

Yes. The aqueduct ends at a small circular temple in San Concordio, south of the railway, and its arches can be followed on foot for about 3 km towards Guamo.
